Nominations for the 2013 Nature Awards for Mentoring in Science are now open and this year’s award focus is on Italy.![iStock_000016694187_green]( "iStock_000016694187_green")
Established in 2005, the Nature Awards for Mentoring in Science are annual prizes presented by Nature in recognition of researchers and academics who have devoted their careers to the nurturing of young scientists. Two prizes of €10,000 are awarded, one for a mid-career mentor and one for life-time achievement in mentoring.
Last year’s award focus was on the Nordic countries, and the prizes were won by Staffan Normark, Anders Hagfeldt and Jens Hagfeldt. The three scientists, all based in Sweden, were honoured for their outstanding efforts to mentor young researchers.
Staffan Normark received the lifetime achievement award for his
“capacity to take care of and bring forward not only early research students, but also post-doctoral scientists to do pioneering research in new fields,”
and was presented with a €10,000 prize as part of his award. Anders Hagfeldt and Jens Nielsen were declared joint winners of the mid-career award and share the €10,000 prize.
The panel of judges for the 2013 Awards will be chaired by Professor Luciano Maiani and he’ll be joined by:
- Rosario Fazio, Scuolo Normale Superiore, Pisa
- Elisabetta Dejana, IFOM, Milan
- Dario Braga, University of Bologna, Bologna
- Maria Cristina Facchini, ISAC-CNR, Bologna
- Alison Abbott, Senior European Correspondent, Nature
Nominees may work in any discipline within the natural sciences and should be resident in Italy. They may be nominated by colleagues and ex-colleagues, or nominate themselves – and nominations for a candidate must include independent testimonials by at least five researchers mentored by their nominee, not all over the same period.
